It should come as no surprise that I am currently reading:
The Last Greatest Magician In The World:
Howard Thurston versus Houdini & The Battles of the American Wizards
by Jim Steinmeyer
I am a big fan of Steinmeyer and anything he writes, but I am also a huge Thurston fan. Unfortunately I’ve never really had much access to too much information directly about the man. It has always been someone closely connected to him in some way. The Jarrett Book for example and the horrible portrait Jarrett paints of Thurston. The big Kellar book by Caveney, and the “passing of the mantle” or the stories from random magicians.
I can tell you that this book (so far) has me glued to the page. Steinmeyer writes with passion and the the grimy underbelly that Thurston came from is eye opening and very telling of the past master.
I always find there is so much to read in between the lines of books like this. It might be personal introspection and attempting to pull information that isn’t explicitly written, or it might be that I am just hungry for any information about Thurston. In any case, I am loving this book and the price tag is very low for a beautiful hard cover book.
